A new version that feels like an integer release By Ko Maruyama
MAXON Computer released their newest version of CINEMA 4D, the 3D application that has quickly become the favorite of broadcast designers and animators.  The name of the newest version, R 11.5 gives the illusion that the update is a minor upgrade from previous R11.2 version. However, the multitude of new features in R11.5 makes the upgrade feel like a integer release.

As a favorite 3D application in the broadcast graphics community, artists will want to know that the Mograph tools have been improved dramatically.  Mograph2 now contains calculations for bullet dynamics.  Simply put, this means that the objects cloned within mograph can now simulate dynamic animations with the addition of a simple tag.   And I'll cover the improvements made to Mograph a little later.

Another major upgrade to this version is seen within the renderer.  While some might question the appeal of a render engine rebuild if they are coming to 3D for the first time, it should be pointed out that the new render process not only includes a substantially faster render engine, but also adds several new ways to view and modify your images and render settings.  And I'll cover the improvements made to the render process a little later.

And as most beginner and advanced 3D artists know, creating the 3D scene, movie, or object is only the beginning of the delivery process.  As such, MAXON has launched itself to the top of the broadcast design community because it is very easy to export the data to Adobe After Effects, Apple Motion and more.   Now, C4D supports Apple Motion 3D data as well (similarly to the After Effects 3D data).  But... you know, I'll talk more about that later.

These are the three notable changes, in very broad strokes.  There are additional, perhaps less visible, but equally beneficial to animators and 3D motion designers.  Of course, I'll mention a few of my favorites (so far) a little bit later.


Mograph 2 is a large umbrella which covers several different upgrades that can all be found within the family of mograph tools.  In the past few years, since the introduction of the mograph cloners and effectors, 3D broadcast design has dramatically changed.  It has changed not only in the style of animation, but the different creative explorations that the tools have afforded artists has modified how animators and broadcast designers think about 3D.   Mograph 2 will continue to challenge animators and creative directors - to think about how they might push their own design.

Some new features in Mograph 2 include MoDynamics and MoSpline.

MoDynamics is based on Bullet physics library which quickly and easily gives animations a dynamics simulation that has not been available within the Mograph tool before.  Common parameters like Gravity, Friction, Bounce will generate millions of different creative ideas in any C4D animator's hands.

The basic idea behind the MoDynamics is easy for anyone with a working knowledge of MoGraph 1.   When items are added to a MoGraph cloner object, the resulting objects can be tagged with data, telling C4D that they should respond to specific dynamic forces.   Other, non-mograph object can be marked with a similar tag, making them rigid bodies, recognized by those MoGraph clones who have been tagged with MoDynamics.  The rest is up to a few simulation parameters which can control the relationship between the objects.   No keyframes are required to create stunningly realistic relationships between the objects.    For advanced users, taking advantage of some of the MoGraph tools previously at your disposal can make your animations much more engaging.
